The Centennial Light Bulb & What You Need to Know
The Livermore Light Bulb that Never Goes Out
The Centennial Light Bulb glows around the clock at the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department. The fire department says that the Centennial Light Bulb is at least 117 years old, and it has been turned off only a handful of times. You can see this incredible feat of electrical engineering in The Guinness Book of World Records, Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, and even General Electric.
The History of the Bulb
Dennis Bernal, owner of the Livermore Power and Water Company, donated the bulb to the fire department in 1901. The Centennial Light Bulb’s recognition as the longest lasting bulb in the world is well-documented. Its media recognition dates back to the 1970s. Since its acknowledgment by The Guinness Book of World Records in 1972, the 4-watt dynamo has received ongoing press about its extraordinary lifespan. Each passing year marks a new milestone.
Fun Facts About the Bulb

- Bulb-watchers received a fright in 2013 when the light appeared to burn out. Luckily, a faulty power supply was to blame. The Centennial Light Bulb turned on shortly after.
- Although this bulb may not be riveting entertainment, you can check on how it is doing by viewing the light bulb’s live webcam.
A Burning Conspiracy
The Centennial Bulb is more than a mere artifact comprised of glass, metal, and filament. Given its history and its incredible ability to endure, there must be more to this little relic than its manufacturing. The lightbulb’s most celebrated conspiracy is that once upon a time, products were built to last. It was at the beginning of the 1920s that a group of businessmen realized that if a product refuses to wear out, then it would be the end of businesses. Shortly after, the first worldwide cartel was set up to reduce the lifespan of the incandescent light bulb.
