4 of the Best Things to Do when Visiting Lake Del Valle Regional Park

Deep in a valley framed by oak-covered hills, with sailboats and sailboards skimming over its waters, Del Valle is like a lakeside resort only 10 miles south of Livermore. (For all our Livermore recommendations, download our free area vacation guide!)

The park’s most notable draw is a Lake Del Valle, a water-sports haven with five miles of space. But the park’s 4,000+ acres of land provide ample room to stretch your legs on a hike—or explore on horseback!

There are seemingly endless trails to hike at Del Valle Regional Park

Spring and summer are absolutely prime time to explore Del Valle Regional Park. There\’s plenty to keep you occupied—and plenty of space to spread out and relax if you choose. Or, why not do both?

During the summer, you can enjoy one of the low-key, drop-in naturalist programs at Del Valle Regional Park. Enjoy breakfast with us on Saturday morning, then head over for an hour of naturalist history that\’ll enrich the rest of your afternoon at the park.

On Saturdays from 11-noon, topics include everything from Spanish missionary techniques for making ink and quills to Native American games, tree identification and beneficial insects.

No matter what the topic, you’re sure to learn more about Del Valle with the bonus of new knowledge to take home to your own backyard.

Boat Tours on Lake Del Valle

Nothing says summer quite like a cool breeze whipping through your hair as you cruise the lake. You can explore the farthest reaches of Lake Del Valle, all while kicking your feet up, on a guided boat tour. A naturalist interpreter will be your guide on this boat trip. You’ll find out about the creatures in the park both aquatic, land and air. Plus, you’ll hear the history of the dam as you cruise in comfort. Bring a jacket, sunscreen, and binoculars.

Age 13 and up—$5; Age 1-12 and Seniors—$3; Under 1 year—free if in parent’s arms. All children under 13 (including infants) and all non-swimming adults will be required to wear a provided flotation device. (Programs may be canceled if there are five or fewer participants.)

For a less formal day on the lake, there’s plenty of opportunities to fish. Known as an excellent fishing location in the Tri-Valley Area, Del Valle is regularly stocked for fishers with trout and catfish. You also may throw in your line and pull out large- and smallmouth bass, striped bass, and panfish.

Exploring Del Valle on Foot

Hikers take note: Del Valle also is the eastern gateway to the Ohlone Wilderness Trail, 28 miles of scenic back-country trail.

For budding naturalists, you can even download a Wildflower Photo Guide on the Del Valle website.

Del Valle Visitors Center

The Rocky Ridge Visitor Center at Del Valle provides extra incentive to go. The center is open 10:30am through 5pm Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Located on the lake’s west side, the visitor center features exhibits and information about the natural history of Del Valle and surrounding wilderness.
